Behind the Design: My own Foyer!

If you have ever heard the story of the shoemaker’s kids, well, that is me as a designer! I never seem to get around to designing my own home. Between doing everyone else’s homes, and not being able to make a decision (analysis paralysis anyone?) I just can’t seem to get to together!

We moved into our new home in October and I decided this would be the one I actually took the time to design. I have big plans for this home, and have finally finished the mood boards for the first 4 rooms. I am so excited to share, and share my design process with you! I will be featuring one mood board a week from my home design and going through my design process, and hope to inspire you in the process!

First up is the foyer!

What better place to begin than the entrance to our home!

Believe it or not, I am only purchasing 2 items for this room! I have most of these pieces already, but they are spread out in other rooms in our home at the moment.

I love shopping in my own home first. Just because it has lived in a spot for a while, doesn’t mean it needs to stay in that spot, in that color, in that size. I always suggest doing this as a stepping off point. Find something you already love, and look at it in a new light! For me it was the rug. This rug is currently living in my art room, however, it is WAY too nice to stay in my art room. It needs to live a happy life welcoming everyone to our home. It is a little too big, however, so I am going to have it cut down to a custom size that is just right for the space. Pro Tip: if you cannot purchase a rug in the size you need, get the closest to it and call your local carpet store and ask for a referral to someone who can cut it down and serge it for you. It is a great way to make a square rug, or a unique shape, from an existing piece or something you just really love but it’s not quite right!

I am also repurposing the lamp and console art (from my family room), mirror (sitting in storage), ottoman (from my dining room). The floor vase and pendant light are already living in this room. I have the art light leftover from a project (I know, perk of being a designer) and will be painting the larger canvases myself. I am very much looking forward to doing the art for our home myself! I promise there will be more of that to come later!

Now for the new pieces!

We will soon be redoing our floors, which has been my dream since moving in! Y’all, good floors are expensive, but so worth it! We really wanted to do them when we first moved in, but that wasn’t possible. I have to admit though, I am glad we waited. We decided to do a better quality, better color, better fit for our lives. We are doing a high-end LVT (luxury vinyl tile) that is the most wood feeling option I have been able to find. As much as we love wood floors, between the 2 giant golden retrievers and our crazy family, we need something to hold up to our life. We really loved the DuChateau Vinyl Deluxe Grand Collection in Lancia. It is a great color that blends with all of our mixed wood tones. Beyond that, it is waterproof, anti-microbial, high shock and sound absorbent. It is a floating floor with an attached underlayment, which makes it a softer step than hard wood. A big selling factor, is that we can go right over our existing tile floors without having to demo and live with the dust for the next 6 months. Cannot wait to get them installed!

We have a very odd shaped foyer with nothing but doorways. I have one wall that I can actually put a piece of furniture on, and it is a whopping 56” wide. I need just the right piece that would make a statement without overpowering the space. This console fit the bill. I love how the glass will reflect the light, it has a bit of a curve, and I can store the leopard ottoman under it. I love the look of a great ottoman under a parsons console, and who doesn’t love a pop of leopard! Believe it or not, I found this console at Homedepot.com! It’s crazy, I know! But it is a site that will definitely surprise you! One of my trade lines carries a very similar console, however, the size was smaller than I wanted at 42”. After a quick google search, this 49” gem popped up and was perfect! The price tag? $258.00, shipped! I definitely love a high-low mix, especially when it looks like this!

Finally, the link accessory on the console is one of my all time favorite pieces! I love the size and how it adds a little touch of gold. I’ve been trying to find the perfect spot to place this Arteriors piece, and I know this is just right!

I am so happy with this look and cannot wait to see it come to life! It is elegant, but interesting, and projects the vibe I want for our entire home.

Be sure to come back next week for more Behind the Design of our new dining room design!
